A New World, New Universe, New Release

Celebrating the release of my newest book and series.

Rise of The Captain full cover. Getting Noticed Without Being Obnoxious New Release Day

It all began a year and a half ago. A new idea for another sci-fi universe, a wholly new story. A premise that was born of two ideas. A businessman finding himself in a situation not of his making and the world of piracy in outer space. Space pirates? Hell yes.

Originally conceived as the Businessman Space Pirate, as I developed the story, it was reframed as the Gentleman Space Pirate. Laying out, planning, and plotting the series eventually led to writing the series. With the writing done, I did the formatting, editing, and got cover art – and now I have a new book to share with you!

Today is the launch of The Gentleman Space Pirate First Log – Rise of The Captain.

New release today

The premise, per my website:

Piracy is no different than business, except the part about being cutthroat is literal.

Sam Yeager was a high-level business executive, a rising star gaining wealth, power, and influence. Then, in the blink of an eye, it was gone when he was forcefully taken from everything he had ever known.

In the chaos of the life he was faced with, the best of the bad choices led him to one place: Piracy.

Applying the same tenacity he used in business, Sam survived and thrived. Now he finds himself in command of a pirate ship and a talented crew. But to hold onto this challenging life, they must face down brutal pirates, take on corrupt businesses, and navigate the tricky seas of interstellar politics.

Will the Gentleman Space Pirate and his crew go down in history—or infamy?

Sam and his crew are unique to the world of piracy in many ways, but as the captain, Sam’s story is especially unique and, I believe, intriguing.

Book 1, called the First Log, is Rise of the Captain:

Piracy isn’t all that different from business. Except the wrong move doesn’t get you fired; it gets you dead.

When a routine raid turns out to be a trap, business executive-turned-pirate Sam Yeager learns that someone wants him and his crew dead. If he’s going to remain the captain of his uncommon crew, he needs to find out who set the trap and teach everyone involved what giving no quarter really means.

Piracy is a take-no-prisoners proposition. Will the Gentleman Space Pirate learn why he’s being hunted before his rise ends as abruptly and violently as it began?

The new release is available across a wide range of distributors for Kindle, eBook, paperback, and audiobook.

A different perspective

One exciting thing about this new series is a unique approach on my part to the storytelling.

All the rest of my sci-fi series – Forgotten Fodder, Savagespace, and Void Incursion – are told from a variety of perspectives. I shift the focus from one character to another depending on the chapter.

Rise of The Captain – and the rest of the series – are all told from only 1 character perspective. I’m still writing in the third person, but only from the point of view of one character – Sam Yeager.

This struck me as an interesting approach to take for the storytelling. This creates some different ways to share how the character is thinking, but it also means that if he’s not there, he can’t move the story forward.

Why am I doing this? Because my storytelling ability changes and evolves with every book I write. Also, every book I read influences me, whether it’s fiction or nonfiction. Hence, choosing a different way to share the story felt like a worthwhile endeavor.

One other unique approach to this series: While the novels of the series are sequential, they are each a standalone. No cliffhangers; a distinct beginning, middle, and end in each book. But I do keep them open-ended to lead to the next (which is part of why, while there are currently 5 books in process, I have a vague notion for a sixth).

I’m really excited to share this.

New release, some important similarities

Just like most of my other stories, Rise of The Captain includes strong female characters, nonbinary characters, and people reflecting a blended future I think we can all expect to see.

Look, let’s be honest here. The distant future, no matter how plausible, isn’t going to be the usual white men running the show and their names being everything. The world might be small, but it’s made of 8 billion people. White people, take notice – we’re the minority in this world. For that reason, I blend names and ethnicities because that’s what humanity is going to look like thousands of years in the future.

If you’re offended by my name choices, the number of nonbinary characters, and alternative sexualities (mentioned but not emphasized – there’s no actual sex in my books) I put in my stories, I make no apology. That’s how I envision the future. And I think my idea is very, very plausible (on top of all the parts of sci-fi that are speculative at best, or else wildly imaginative).
